Sierra resident cooks up winning chili

By Staff
Sierra Springs Assisted Living/Retirement Community recently held a Chili Cook-off to chase away the cold winter days. All seven male residents participated in the event by preparing their favorite family chili recipe with family assistance, if needed. Hungry judges Faye Walker, Hartselle Fire Department Lt. Steve Vaughn and Dr. Jason Stephenson, all of Hartselle, came with big appetites and tasted all seven chili entries.
Winners were as follows: Jake Armentrout, first place; Art Deason, second place; and Ed Sommers, honorable mention.
Terri Norwood, director of marketing, and Lisa D. Terry, administrator, said residents enjoyed every delicious pot of chili made by the contestants and the event made for a wonderful, filling afternoon.
Jake's Red Hot Chili (Armentrout's winning recipe)
1 lb. ground beef
1 chopped onion
1 chopped bell pepper
2 cans chili beans
2 cans tomatoes
1/4 cup hot pepper sauce
3 tbsp. chili powder
2 cups water
2 tsp. oregano
Sharp cheddar cheese
Cook ground beef, bell pepper and onion until beef is done. Drain. In a large soup pot, combine all ingredients. Simmer 1-1 1/2 hours. Serve with cheese sprinkled on top. Also good with Mexican cornbread.
