DANVILLE – The target on Kristy Roberts' back is just getting bigger and bigger.
Roberts, the Danville junior softball player, entered the National Federation of State High School Association record book for both batting average and stolen bases for a career and season.
"It's exciting," Roberts said. "I mean, it's neat to be recognized like that."
For her high school career, Roberts is seventh in the nation in batting average at .577. She is the first girl in the state of Alabama to be on the list.
Last season, she was sixth in the nation in stolen bases with 76. The 76 broke the Alabama state record. She also is third in the nation for consecutive stolen bases with 84. The national record for consecutive stolen bases is 131, while second most is 92.
But with more attention and praise piling on, pressure mounts.
"I just have to keep working harder," Roberts said.
Roberts has a bigger problem, though. She pulled her hamstring playing volleyball this summer.
"I'm working hard and going through physical therapy in Decatur," she said. "I'm not exactly sure how long it is going to take to get back to 100 percent. It's discouraging, because I will not be able to start practicing until school starts."
