Churches dominate anti-liquor donors

Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
Families for a Safe Hartselle raised more than $16,000 to keep alcohol out of the city, much of that money coming from area churches.
In its financial disclosure form filed late last month with the probate judge's office, Families for a Safe Hartselle reported $16,743 in donations. The group reported $16,200 in expenses, most of which went to pay for political signs and advertising.
Alabama law requires political action groups or candidates to file reports if they have contributions of more than $1,000. The group in favor of alcohol sales did not raise enough money to file a report.
Most of the money for Families for a Safe Hartselle came from area churches. The largest contribution from a church came from Hartselle Church of Christ, which donated $3,999. The second largest donation came from Grace Church of Falkville, which donated $3,500.
Other churches making donations were: Son Rise Baptist, $250; First Baptist Church, $1,370; East Highland Baptist, $670; Southwest Baptist, $300; and First Assembly of God, $202.
Several businesses also reported donations. Making business donations were: Jim Corum for Corum's Farm Center, $1,000; Sidney Sawyer for Sawyer Chiropractic Center, $100; Edith Bennich for B&G OK Tire Store, $50; Peck Funeral Home, $100; Hartselle Family Medicine, $300; Tony Smith for A Plus Financial Service, $500; and Steve Woodard Sr. for Glenwood Development LLC, $150.
The largest single donation from an individual came from James Kifer of Hartselle, who donated $1,000. Other Hartselle individuals making donations of $50 or more were: Jerri Swann, $50; Glenn and Linda Hamlett, $50; Shirley Wells, $50; Preston and Ruby Hall of Hartselle; Alan and Jane Walker, $100; J.C. and Margaret Dunaway, $150; Mabel Roberts, $250; Chris Warren, $50; Gentry and Jessie Brewer, $50; Wilda Garner, $100; Donald Hall, $75; Robert and Gail Peck, $100; Fay Kelly, $50; Don Ricks, $100; Randy Milligan, $50; Charles and Ruth Balcom, $50; Charles Ritch, $100; Sandy Long, $50; Jimmy Chenault, $100; B.N.
